Without using SEO techniques, No One Will Find Your Website

Keywords and Key phrases are the words that a web surfer, a potential customer, types into a search engine to find a particular product or service. So using relevant keywords in your website is very important if you want these people to find your business and in developing a successful website. This can be a little trickier than it sound because of the huge number of website's that are out there. These are the people that you will be competing against for customers. Using general keyword to describe your products will result in your site competing with literally millions of other website selling the same products. Some of these companies may be big superstores with unlimited recourses to make them prominent in search engine results and almost impossible to compete against unless you use the correct strategies.

Let me give you an example of what I am talking about, lets say that you are going to sell custom made shoes on your website. Well if you only use the keyword "Shoes" in your site no one will find you! Why do I say that, well I just typed in the keyword "Shoes" in Google and there are 303,000,000 webpage's that contain the word "Shoes". And the first three pages of search results are HUGE stores that sell shoes. Companies like Amazon Apparel, Zappos, Nordstrom and Walmart. You would never be able to compete if you concentrated only on this keyword.

Don't get discouraged, what if we try "Custom Made Shoes", there are still many webpage's on the list, but we have removed some of the big players. And if you go through the first three pages you may notice that some of them are not sites that sell shoes. Now we are getting somewhere!

What if we try "Affordable Custom Made Shoes", now we have narrowed the list a little more. And notice that most of the big players are gone and some of the results are kind of obscure sites and maps and information about custom made shoes. Now we're talking! Now that you have got the idea, try to think of a few other ways we can find YOU a niche and type that into your favorite search engine.

It is very important that your domain name (URL) reflect your keywords in some way. As we did in the 'Getting Started' page, go to GoDaddy and see if you can find a URL that contains some, if not all, of your keywords.

Try some different variations with descriptive words. Using the shoe store example, words like 'Affordable', 'leather', 'custom', 'women's', 'men's' and 'work shoes'. If you are selling to a certain region then try using your state or city in your URL. Shoes-San-Mateo.com for example. Give it a try, be creative and have some fun!

One other thing that we need to think about when selecting keywords is how many people are using those words to search for products or services.

Here is a tool that will help -HERE-.

This tool will allow you to type in a keyword or key phrase and will show you how many people have typed these words into there search engines. It will also give you some variations of that word or phrase and how many people are searching for those keywords.
